How to Prepare Your Car

Have a mechanic look over your car
1. Have a mechanic look over your car.

The first step you should take before you leave on your trip is to have your car checked by a mechanic. You'll have more confidence on your travels if your car has a multi-point inspection. Make sure that the mechanic also checks your brakes, especially if you're driving in the mountains or on winding roads.

3. Don't overload your vehicle.

If you're traveling by yourself or with just one other person, you probably don't have to worry about overloading. However, if you're traveling with several people, overloading may become a problem. Make sure you can see out of your rear view window and that nothing blocks your view, but also make sure your vehicle isn't too heavy. The problem with a weighed-down vehicle is that it won't handle as well and have a slower response, which may cause issues on the when you're changing lanes or merging on the interstate.

How To Prepare Yourself

Have a mechanic look over your car
1. Charge your devices.

Make sure your phones and devices are charged beforehand, even if your car comes with chargers. Keep in mind that if you're traveling through areas with spotty coverage, the battery may be drained quickly if it's constantly searching for signal. Data usage can also quickly use up a phone's battery.

Inspect your tires
2. Bring plenty of supplies.

Pack extra supplies for the road. This could be flashlights, extra water and extra jackets during cold seasons. Always keep a first aid kit and tool kit in your vehicle, even if you're going on a short road trip.

Inspect your tires
3. Bring snacks and coffee.

Even if you don't drink coffee, bring something else to help keep yourself alert. During long, uneventful drives, it can be easy to doze off at the wheel, putting you, your passengers and other drivers in danger. At the very least, make sure you get a solid night's sleep before leaving.

Inspect your tires
4. Bring a GPS.

Designate a passenger to navigate for you on their phone or with a map if you don't have a GPS. We recommend that you look at a map before leaving, just in case your GPS loses signal or malfunctions. Even if you don't like using a GPS, it's best to have one in case you find yourself lost somewhere down the road.

Inspect your tires
5. Stay safe.

Here's the most important thing to remember: no destination is as important as the lives of you, your passengers or other drivers on the road. No text is worth answering when you're driving, and no destination is worth speeding to get to. If you're not the one driving, make sure you keep whoever is driving accountable.
